The Australian government has defended its asylum seeker deal with
Malaysia, after a former Human Rights Commissioner described it as worse
than the so-called "Pacific Solution". Sev Ozdowski says the old policy, which was brought in by former prime minister John Howard, was preferable to the new proposed deal because the Australian government was able to maintain control over conditions in its detention centre on the Pacific island of Nauru.
Immigration Minister Chris Bowen says the Malaysian agreement includes assurances that asylum seekers will be treated in accordance with human rights standards.
But the Opposition's Immigration Spokesman Scott Morrison, says Mr Ozdowski is right to raise concerns.
"Mr Ozdowski understands that there is no guarantee for those who are sent to Malaysia that people will be treated in a way that I think Australians would be satisfied with," Mr Morrison said.
"There is no guarantee in terms of how people will be monitored."
