The Australian livestock export industry has been commended for suspending the supply of cattle to Indonesian abattoirs accused of animal cruelty.
An animal rights activist says the industry should never have let it get to that stage.
The Australian livestock export industry was forced to suspend exports to three Indonesian abbatoirs after viewing disturbing footage of animal cruelty filmed by animal rights campaigners.
The Pastoralists and Graziers Association of Western Australia says the suspension sends out a strong message to international abbatoirs that cruelty won't be tolerated.
But Dawn Lowe from the group Animals Angels says the industry should have been actively monitoring the abbatoirs.
"In our experience the industry isn't proactive until it's caught out," she said.
The industry representative Livecorp says it won't be sending any cattle to the abbatoirs where the cruelty occured until it's sure all animal welfare issues are addressed.
