North Korean President Kim Jong-il has concluded a week-long visit to China. Official media in both China and North Korea confirmed that Kim Jong-il met the Chinese President on Wednesday.
China Central Television says Mr Hu urged the North Korean leader to work towards the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula, with Kim Jong-il reportedly agreeing that this should be achieved through dialogue.
President Hu also called for calm and restraint between North and South Korea.
It is not clear if Mr Kim's son and heir apparent Kim Jong-un accompanied his father on his China trip.
